TERRY'S STORY
PTSD and Recovery from Alcohol and Other Drugs

Though identifying details, including his name, have been changed,  the story is true.  Terry left much pain behind when he went to college on a partial scholarship half way across the country. He never looked back, except to try and get his brother Jason to join him. Jason had stayed, trying to fix the unfixable family until the day that Jason gave up, tragically, by killing himself.

When Terry returned to where his brother had killed himself, it had already been cleaned up. There were just a few speckles that had been missed and Terry found them.

As Terry sat in my office, Terry was looking at the walls in my office but seeing a white tiled bathroom with tiny specs of red.

As a young counselor, I knew that I had to help Terry to get out of that bathroom, this time and every time. For Terry, getting stuck in that bathroom meant relapse, first to alcohol, and then to what ever else might temporarily numb the pain.

I did not want him going back into that bathroom until he knew how to get out on his own.

Once he knew how to get out and how to stay out, then he could choose just to look back at the pain and not to go back into it.

Learning to stay in the HERE & NOW meant never having to look back at all, or at least never having to look back until it was safe to do so, until it would not lead to relapse.

Leaning to stay in the HERE & NOW meant staying clean and sober long enough to build a strong recovery before ever choosing to look back.
